I was a student at JAJHS from ’72-75. I never had Mr. Rice but admired him from afar. I remember he substituted for our English class once and taught us about “Tommy”, the then-radical British Rock Opera. I also remember how he befriended one of my friends who was having a rough adolescence and difficult family time and eased him through a tempestuous age. My mom was a teacher at JFK and dedicated her soul to education. Though I have had no formal relationship with Bellmore-Merrick since I graduated from Mepham in 1978, in my journey to my current life as a pediatrician I suppose my roots lie therein. I plan to make a recurring donation to the scholarship fund to honor Jack’s memory and moreover the contribution of educators worldwide to the development of our youth.
